Make your e-commerce accessible now

By Joakim Sommar Reading time: 1 minute

Hopefully, with an e-commerce business, you are already aware of the new rules regarding accessibility for e-commerce.

The directive, which applies throughout the EU, will apply from 28 June 2025. However, it is good to be out in good time for several different reasons. Below we have listed some points to keep in mind:

  • It can take several months to review the availability of your website depending on the size of your e-commerce business.
  • Many will have a great need to adapt e-commerce technically, depending on how the website is structured.
  • UX and UI are an important part because usability goes hand in hand with accessibility.

UX provides a seamless experience

The work of improving the user experience (UX) can in many cases be time-consuming, which of course depends on what your current website and information structure looks like. UX is important for the smooth use of e-commerce, and a seamless experience means that more people continue to shop with you.

The design (UI) is important for several reasons

Among other things, to enhance the user experience, but also, above all, because there are several requirements in the visual for accessibility. We have previously written about these, it is about achieving at least WCAG AA, which is largely about contrast of various kinds. A common flaw in e-commerce is too low color contrast, such as a green buy button with white text.

Start on time

Earlier, I wrote about the importance of building accessible websites and that even if your website is not affected by directives at present, it is good to review this now, not least for the sake of your users. For those of you with e-commerce, it is not long until June 28, 2025, the years go by quickly and for a larger e-commerce it will be an extensive work and it is therefore my recommendation to start planning the work today.
