Facts, inspiration and good advice on how we can reduce our digital footprint in everyday life in IT and digital services. Speakers at Epinova's sustainability event were Cecilia Hjertzell, Head of Sustainability at T.Loop, Simon Piquer, IT Service Manager at Coor and Linus Ekström, CEO and Solution Architect at Epinova.

Speakers with different angles

Cecilia Hjertzell from T.Loop gave good facts based on research on carbon dioxide emissions linked to data centers and our connected behavior. An eye-opener to how we as individuals can reduce our environmental impact.

Linus Ekström talked about technical measures that Epinova implements for its customers regarding image rendering and data storage. In addition, regular measurement of carbon impact is recommended to keep track and maintain good values.

Simon Piquer from Coor shared concrete actions and fun activities that involve everyone at the company in the fight for better environmental values. A real case where Coor has managed to create awareness and thereby reduce its data storage.

"Soon the electricity will run out"

The need for more data storage requires more data centers, which in most cases are fossil-fueled in the United States and China. Switch to Sweden and use a better energy mix.

Think before you send a thank you email

If every Brit sent one less thank-you email a day (they are so polite), we'd save 16,433 tons of coal per year - that's as much as 81,152 flights to Madrid.

Use chat instead of email

From an energy perspective, it's better to Teams than to send an email. If email is still necessary, skip all of them on cc, and link to files instead of attaching and you reduce the environmental impact.

How you as a company can reduce carbon emissions

  • Clear rules and guidelines for employees regarding data storage
  • Make demands on suppliers regarding green hosting and cloud solutions
  • Clean up old data using automation
  • Lease and reuse mobiles, computers and electronics
  • Lazy loading – load images on the web only when they are needed
  • Optimize web images to match your needs

How you as an individual can reduce environmental impact

  • Share links, not files
  • Clean up regularly, even data
  • Turn off Wifi when you go on vacation or don't use it
  • Use the Compress Slides feature in PowerPoint
  • Keep track of your Microsoft version history (throw away old drafts)
  • Optimize the loading of scripts and stylesheets
